Two people have been killed and six wounded during clashes that erupted in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, security sources said on Sunday.
AFP identified 22-year-old Mohammed Yussef, from the Alawite Jabal Mohsen area, and a 13-year-old boy from the neighbouring Sunni area of Bab el-Tebbaneh as the victims.
In the Jabal Mohsen area, one was wounded, whilst in the Bab el-Tebbaneh area, six injured persons were reported by AFP.
"Lebanese military forces are in the area and responding to the sources of gunfire," the source said.
The city of Tripoli is made up of a Sunni majority but is also inhabited by a small number of Alawites, the branch of Shiite Islam that Syrian President Bashar Assad belongs to.
In Syria, clashes between the two sectarian groups is not uncommon and has significantly raised tensions between the communities living in neighbouring Lebanon.
