Lebanon officially appointed Sunni politician, Tamam Salam, to form a new government on Saturday, following the resignation of the country's prime minister two weeks ago, Reuters reported.
Salam has been a popular contender for the role, flying to Saudi Arabia last week to speak get the backing of former Lebanese prime minister, Saad Hariri.
MPs voted overwhelmingly in support of the Sunni politician leading the new government on Saturday.
Salam will be tasked with preparing for the Lebanese parliamentary elections in June. However, he faces serious problems with sectarian tensions spilling over from the neighboring Syrian war and no agreed-upon electoral system.
Salam served as culture minister between 2008 and 2009 and has close ties to the Western-backed March 14 coalition.
