A prison van carrying six prisoners skid off a south Lebanon highway and flipped over Thursday, injuring each passenger and the police driver, security sources told The Daily Star.
The accident occurred on a curve on the Mussaileh road in the Zahrani region when the police vehicle veered off the wet road. It smashed into a parked bulldozer and flipped over and landed on its side.
The six prisoners were being transferred from Nabatieh to a police station.
Civil Defense and Lebanese Red Cross rescue teams rushed to the scene to treat the injured. Lebanese Army troops cordoned off the are to prevent an attempt by the prisoners to escape.
The sources said the handcuffed inmates were transferred by Red Cross ambulances to hospitals in Sidon, while Civil Defense teams removed the driver who was trapped behind the wheel.
