Grand Mufti Abdel-Latif Derian Monday visited former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri's grave in Downtown Beirut on the eve of the 12th anniversary of his assassination.
"Rafik Hariri was a symbol of Lebanon's stability and prosperity," Derian said.
He said that the former PM's memory "will remain strongly represented by his son [Future Movement chief and premier] Saad Hariri."
The Mufti added that Lebanon's "individuality was in its pluralism and dialogue."
Hariri was killed along with 21 others in a massive car bombing on Feb. 14, 2005. The circumstances of his death shook the country and resulted in the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon, which had been present in the country for 29 years. Syria was initially blamed for the killing.
However, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, established by the United Nations to investigate Hariri’s assassination, has later indicted five Hezbollah officials in absentia.
Both Hezbollah and Damascus strongly deny any involvement in the crime.
Saad Hariri is scheduled to address a ceremony held in commemoration of his father Tuesday at the Biel complex in Downtown Beirut.
