Lebanon issued Monday six arrest warrants, five in absentia, for members of a “terrorist cell” involved in bombings, including an ambush that killed a Hezbollah member in the Bekaa Valley.
Military Investigative Judge Fadi Sawwan issued the warrants after completing interrogation with a Syrian suspect, a judicial source told The Daily Star.
Sawwan issued an arrest warrant for the detained Syrian man, the source added.
He issued five other arrest warrants in absentia for five fugitives – Lebanese and Syrians – on charges of being accomplices in the terrorist acts, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The suspects are charged with belonging to an armed organization with the aim of carrying out terrorist acts.
Last week, the Syrian suspect, identified only by his initials R.A., was accused – along with the other suspects – of buying and preparing bombs aimed at targeting vehicles passing along the road to the border area of Masnaa in east Lebanon.
In addition to the Hezbollah member killed, three others were wounded in the ambush last month that targeted a convoy belonging to the resistance group on the highway linking the Bekaa Valley to Syria.
A roadside bomb exploded near two SUVs carrying Hezbollah members on the highway linking the town of Majdal Anjar to the Masnaa border crossing.
The vehicles were shot at following the explosion and several bullets hit the windshield of one of the SUVs, a GMC with tinted windows.
The ambush came a week after a bombing in the pro-Hezbollah Beirut southern suburb of Bir al-Abed that wounded over 50 people.
A number of attacks have targeted pro-Hezbollah areas in the country likely in retaliation for the party's intervention in Syria.
