Lebanese Defense Minister Khalil Al Hrawi on Wednesday denied reports the Lebanese army was planning to enter Palestinian refugee camps due to "the regional and international fallout of the issue."
Hrawi, who made the statements in an interview with the Voice of Lebanon radio, cited by the Kuwaiti official news agency (KUNA), described as "good" a meeting held at the defense ministry with representatives of Palestinian organizations in the refugee camps as good.
He said he told the representatives that the Lebanese troops are stationed near the camps to ensure their protection.
He stressed that “there is an understanding with the Palestinian factions under which they ensure security inside the camps.”
A Lebanese security source told KUNA that meetings are underway inside the camp of Ein Al Hilwe near Sidon between the different Palestinian factions and the Al Ansar group to form a security committee.
The Ansar Islamist movement was listed on the US terrorist organizations list in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.
