Lebanon's Prime Minister Rafik al Hariri resigned Tuesday, a statement from the president's office said.
Hariri submitted his Cabinet's resignation to President Emile Lahoud after a meeting at the presidential palace Tuesday night, the statement said. Lahoud asked Hariri to continue as caretaker until a new prime minister is appointed and a Cabinet formed.
Hariri is widely expected to be asked to form the next government.
A change of government has been the subject of public discussion for several months and appeared to have been put off by regional developments with the imminent war in Iraq.
