Unidentified gunmen attacked a number of army positions and a patrol in Baalbeck in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley overnight, killing one soldier, the Army said in a statement Monday.
The soldier, Ali al-Afi, was a Baalbeck native and a father of one, acording to a eulogy released by the Army.
The deadly incident reportedly came hours after the Lebanese Army reportedly shot and injured two men who tried to force their way through a checkpoint.
The two men, Abbas al-Masri and Jaafar al-Afi, at least one of them already previously wanted by the authorities, were reportedly injured in the gunbattle and taken to Dar Al Amal University Hospital in Baalbeck.
The Lebanese Army was not available for comment when contacted by The Daily Star.
