At least seven Iraqis were killed and scores injured on Tuesday when mortars exploded in a crowded street in Baghdad, witnesses said. Five cars were destroyed in the explosion at Rasheed Street, in the center of the city. The mortars were launched from the western bank of the Tigris river.
Iraqi officials had earlier reported the explosion was a car bomb, but later corrected that account.
Of the sesven dead, two were children. Three of the bodies were burned beyond recognition, Iraqi sources said.
An American soldier and a civilian security guard were also wounded when another mortar fell between a convention center, where a key national conference began its last day, and the interim Iraqi government building, the US Army said. (albawaba.com)
