ALBAWABA - A massive landslide wiped out an entire village in the Darfur region of western Sudan, killing more than 1,000 people, the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) movement, which controls the region, said Tuesday.
The movement outlined in a statement that destructive landslides completely destroyed the village of Tarsin, east of Jebel Marra, near the Soni area, killing its entire population, estimated at more than 1,000, including women and children. Only one person survived, according to preliminary information.
The statement explained that the disaster occurred on Sunday "due to the heavy rains that fell in the last week of August."
The Sudan Liberation Army added that the village was "completely leveled" as a result of the landslide, appealing to the United Nations and regional and international organizations to assist in recovering the bodies of the dead from the rubble.
