Lebanese President Emile Lahoud will travel to Morocco on Wednesday for a two-day official visit, in response to an invitation from King Mohammed, reported the Daily Star newspaper.

Sources described the visit as of special importance and said talks between the two sides would cover the latest regional developments and strengthening bilateral relations.

The sources cited Morocco’s desire to consolidate ties with the government here, pointing out that the late King Hassan was a member of the tripartite committee which held contacts with various sides in the 1980s to help put an end to the country’s civil war, said the paper.

The sources told the paper that Morocco enjoyed a high international, Arab and Islamic standing, particularly as King Mohammed was chairman of the Morocco-based Jerusalem Committee and a prominent member of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The talks are expected to focus on issues such as Israeli threats against both Lebanon and Syria, continued Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace, and the Palestinian refugees’ right to return.

Other topics will include the need for an end to Israeli violence against Palestinians, and the forthcoming Francophonie summit, due to be held in Beirut in October.

A number of agreements and draft protocols also need to be updated or pursued regarding bilateral ties. These agreements include those covering economic and cultural ties, said the paper - Albawaba.com
