A blast at Kuwait's Al-Shuaiba Oil Refinery has caused no casualties among the station's staff, Head of the Public Relations Department in the National Petroleum Company (KNPC) Mohammad Al-Ajami said Saturday. "However, work is now underway to control the resulting fire and extinguish it," he said, according to Kuna.

"A fire erupted in KNPC's Al-Shuaiba heavy oil refinery at 13:00 p.m. on Saturday," he confirmed.

Fire Brigade units were dispatched to the site of the incident to deal with the fire, "which was classified as third degree" according to the scales adopted by the oil sector for such accidents, he said.

He added that no casulties were reported among the workers at the oil refinery. However, an extensive investigation was launched to reveal the causes of the blast.

Al-Shuaiba Oil Refinery is one of Kuwait's three major refineries.
