Kurdish forces, assisted by US-led airstrikes, have regained control of villages around the town of Kobani in Syria after pushing back Daesh militants, Reuters has reported.

The forces took back control of at least 163 villages in the past three weeks, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The monitoring group said that although the Kurds had recaptured many villages since winning back Kobani in late January, their progress had been hindered by clashes west and southwest of the town, where Daesh had redirected its fighters.

The militant group now controls large areas of northern and eastern Syria.
