Fighting between Afghan security forces and Taliban militants moved into a second day in the capital of Afghanistan's most embattled northern province of Kunduz, a local official said Tuesday.

"At the moment there is fighting going on in district 1 and district 3 of Kunduz city," said Zar Gul Alimi, a provincial council member from Kunduz.

She said the militant group had used the night to move fighters within the compounds of the Afghan Red Crescent Society and the counter-narcotics police and that they were currently involved in gun battles with Afghan forces. The Red Crescent Society could not immediately be reached for confirmation.

According to Alimi, Afghan forces have made little impression on Taliban positions since Monday night.

The Taliban launched their attack on the north-eastern city of Kunduz from several directions on early Monday morning, almost exactly a year after first seizing the city for two weeks.

The European Union is set to host an international conference in Brussels on Tuesday and Wednesday, focusing on international aid for the country.
