Princess Dina Mired, Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Dr. Hashim Elzein Elmousaad, Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Jordan. The purpose of the MOU is to provide ongoing accessible adequate treatment for underprivileged displaced Iraqi patients suffering from cancer at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC), one of the most prominent comprehensive cancer treatment centers in the region. WHO, with their third donation to KHCF’s Iraqi Goodwill Fund, contributed USD $400,000. This funding alleviates the financial burden of treatment costs for disadvantaged Iraqi cancer patients at KHCC.
This amount supplements USD $200,000 which WHO generously donated to the KHCF Iraqi Goodwill Fund in July, 2008 and $300,000 donated in February, 2009 to provide financial support to underprivileged cancer patients not covered by medical insurance. A total of 102 Iraqis with various types of cancer were helped with their life-saving treatment through these funds. WHO, understanding the need for ongoing support for Iraqi patients, contributed USD $400,000 to assist the many Iraqi patients at KHCC.
Since its inception in 2006, the KHCF Iraqi Goodwill Fund has aimed to provide financial relief to Iraqi cancer patients throughout Jordan. Between 2003 and 2007, the number of Iraqis reported with cancer at KHCC was 1,124. Currently, there are over 25 underprivileged Iraqis visiting KHCC each month seeking cancer treatment.
HRH Princess Dina Mired said, “Cancer knows no boundaries. We, at the King Hussein Cancer Foundation, see the enormous and urgent need to help the steadily growing number of Iraqi patients seeking treatment at KHCC. The Foundation, on behalf of the many Iraqi patients and their families who will now be able to continue their treatment, thanks the WHO for their ongoing support.”

Established in 1997, KHCF is the legal umbrella organization responsible for KHCC, the Foundation’s medical arm. The Foundation is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization run by a Board of Trustees comprised of prominent volunteers and chaired by HRH Princess Ghida Talal.
In support of its mission, the Foundation carries out various fundraising activities to maintain the life-saving work of the Center. These donations and contributions are channeled towards upgrading the medical capacity of the Center by purchasing medical equipment and/or supporting medical programs, promoting early detection and awareness programs, as well as extending aid to cancer patients who are unable to cover the cost of cancer treatment.
As a testament to its ongoing pursuit of excellence, KHCC received its first international accreditation in 2006 from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as a general hospital, which was renewed in 2009. KHCC also received accreditation in 2007 from JCAHO as a disease-specific cancer center. In 2009, The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of KHCC was awarded an international accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP). This international accreditation testifies to the exceptional high quality of KHCC’s pathology and laboratory services. KHCC also received an accreditation from the Health Accreditation Council of Jordan (HCAC) which affirms that KHCC is applying the national healthcare quality standards for patient care, patient safety, and organizational excellence.
