The King Hussein Cancer Foundation Launches Towards Life Campaign in Partnership with Zain for Seventh Year

On the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan, the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) launched its annual 'Towards Life' Campaign for the seventh year running in partnership with Zain – part of the Zain Group, the leading mobile operator in the Middle East and Africa. . The Towards Life Campaign enables the general public to contribute their Zakat to underprivileged, Muslim cancer patients receiving treatment at the King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC).

A press conference was held at the Center on Monday to launch the Towards Life Campaign, during which Dr. Abdel Malek Al Jaber, Zain's CEO, presented HRH Princess Dina Mired, Director General of the Foundation with a check for JD 50,000 from Zain as a contribution towards the Campaign.

Princess Dina expressed her appreciation to Zain for their ongoing support of the Towards Life Campaign and emphasized that Zain's contributions have become the underlying factor ensuring the success of this essential campaign and benefiting many underprivileged cancer patients at KHCC. Since 2003 Zain has contributed close to US$ 1,000,000 (one million US dollars) to the Foundation's programs.

Dr. Abdel Malek Al Jaber stated that Zain's partnership with KHCF is a reflection of their faith in the Foundation and its mission, and an indication of their understanding of their social responsibly as one of the largest companies in the country. He added that the health sector is of particular interest to the company as it addresses society's humanitarian concerns, especially with children who make up the largest proportion of the population of the Kingdom.

Dr. Al Jaber added that Zain's commitment and sponsorship of local campaigns such as the Foundation's annual Towards Life Campaign gives citizens the opportunity to join national efforts to fight cancer. All contributions to this Campaign are dedicated towards providing treatment and relief to underprivileged cancer patients at KHCC. Dr. Al Jaber emphasized Zain's determination to continue providing support for humanitarian efforts and organizations that serve society and its pressing issues.

The Towards Life Campaign provides the opportunity for Zakat Al Fitr contributions to be made during the Holy Month of Ramadan and until the end of the year by sending a short SMS message with the word Life or حياة to 97070. With each message, JD 1 will be donated in full to the Foundation. Zakat Al Amwal contributions can also be made during the Holy Month of Ramadan by calling the Foundation at 06-5544960.

Princess Dina thanked Mobile Interactive Technologies Co. (MIT) for donating their entire income from the Campaign to KHCF. Her Royal Highness also commended the efforts of all the Foundation's supporters - whether organizations, companies or individuals – for supporting the Foundation and the fight against cancer, saying that it is only through their support and generosity that the Foundation and Center have been able to achieve excellence and provide quality comprehensive cancer care to patients in Jordan and the region. Princess Dina noted in particular the support of the local media, print, radio and television, in publishing advertisements and promotions for this campaign.

During the press conference, Zain announced that it would send an SMS message to all Zain subscribers during the Holy Month of Ramadan, encouraging them to support the Campaign which begins with the start of the Holy Month and draws to a close at the end of the year.

At the conclusion of the press conference Princess Dina congratulated all those present on the onset of the Holy Month of Ramadan and reminded them that the Foundation received an official Fatwa (an Islamic Legal Pronouncement) from the Jordanian Fatwa Council (Fatwa number 2/2006 dated March 22, 2006) qualifying the King Hussein Cancer Foundation as a recipient of Zakat.
