Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said on Monday that his reform platform had made great achievements in the past four years.

Khatami’s remarks came in his election campaign address at Shiroudi stadium in Tehran, attended by at least 50,000 Iranians.

“Fortunately, the people are easily demanding economic welfare and political freedom, while such demands were not welcome four years ago,” he said, quoted by the official Iranian news agency (IRNA).

Khatami is among ten candidates for the June 8 presidential elections.

"The votes you cast four years ago for the reform program have made a drastic change in the mentality of the Iranian community. The demands put forward by the reform movement were already unacceptable and those advocating the demands were regarded as anti-religious and counterrevolutionary," Khatami told his supporters.

"Today, everyone is free to express desire for freedom, civil society, social justice and the fundamental rights of the people. Isn't it a victory for the reform movement?" he asked.

"We cannot advocate the people's demands, on one hand, and create obstacles and throw stones in the way of the people's progress on the other," he said – Albawaba.com
