Iran's President Mohammed Khatami called on Saturday for further expansion of ties between Iran and Egypt, reported Iran News Agency (IRNA).
Khatami's remarks, said the agency, were made during a meeting with Egypt's Mufti, Farid Nasr Wassel.
Wassel and other clerics at Al-Azhar University arrived in Tehran last week and participated at an Islamic conference, said the agency.
For his part, the Egyptian mufti called on Tehran and Cairo to bolster
political, economic and cultural ties "to dishearten the enemies."
Relations between Cairo and Tehran, which were broken in 1980 after the Islamic revolution in Iran, have warmed in recent years and are now at the level of charges d'affaires.
Officials from both sides have called recently for a full restoration of diplomatic relations -- Albawaba.com
