Iranian President Mohammad Khatami has called on reformist parliament members staging a sit-in at the Iranian parliament over the mass disqualification of candidates from February's elections to end their protest, promising them his government was taking action on the matter.
According to IRIB, the Iranian president stressed on Wednesday that action would be taken "within the framework of the country's constitution".
Khatami highlighted the need to meet the "rights" of all the people as is stressed in the country's constitution, and said this includes their "free and massive participation in different elections", IRIB added.
"The president stated that the rejection of candidacies was illegal and not acceptable," reformist MP Ahmad Borghani said after closed-door discussions with Khatami on Wednesday.
"He asked deputies to end the protest, and assured us that he and the government would use all means to obtain a revision of the disqualifications," said the MP, one of nearly 100 deputies who have been staging a sit-in protest at the Majlis [parliament] building since Sunday. (Albawaba.com)
