Iran’s spiritual leader Ali Khamenei has called on Iranians to turn out in massive numbers for the June 8 presidential elections, reported the Tehran Times newspaper on Saturday.
Addressing thousands of worshipers gathered at Tehran University campus for Friday prayers, he said “it is a religious, social and political duty of everyone in Iran to participate in the upcoming presidential polls.”
The elections are the “source of growth and development for the country, and a symbol of honor, freedom, power and the awareness of the masses,” the paper quoted him as saying.
He said a heavy public turnout would best demonstrate the power of Iran's Islamic system.
Khamenei called on the candidates to avoid spending huge sums of money on their campaigns, adding that the hopefuls could profit from the time allocated to them by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) agency to express their viewpoints, according to the paper.
