Libyan leader Muammar Kadhafi told leaders of the Philippines’ Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) that he was happy at the June 22 signing of a peace accord between the MILF and the government of the Philippines, according to the Manila Bulletin on Tuesday.

"We are happy that the talks resulted in this accord in Libya. We hope the two parties will implement the agreement in its spirit, for the good of both sides," Libyan envoy to Manila Ambassador Salem Adem quoted Kadhafi as saying.

The Libyan leader reaffirmed his vow to help President Arroyo in her development programs for the Philippines, particularly for Muslim Mindanao, Adem said.

Al Hajj Murad Ebrahim, chairman of the MILF peace panel, praised Kadhafi for continuously playing a key role in the Philippines' peace process, the latest of which is the just-concluded government-MILF negotiations at the Mahari Hotel in Tripoli.

"Our brother, Col. Muammar Kadhafi, welcomed the signing of the peace agreement between the MILF and the government of the Republic of the Philippines," Al Hajj Murad said.

The MILF leader said Kadhafi expressed hopes that further talks between the Philippine government and the Moro rebels would bear fruit.

Saiful Islam, son of the Libyan leader, hosted the June 20-22 negotiations that produced the Agreement on Peace between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

"To all the audience here, I assure you that the Kadhafi International Foundation for Charitable Associations will help in the implementation of the agreement," Islam said, after signing as a witness on June 22 – Albawaba.com
