Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak received on Saturday Ahmad Qaddafeddam, cousin of Libyan Leader Muammar Kadhafi, who was sent to clarify Libya’s position regarding withdrawal from the Arab Summit earlier in the day.
The Libyan envoy conveyed to Mubarak a verbal massage from Kadhafi in which he “underlined Libya’s keenness on maintaining good relations with Egypt and President Mubarak,” stressing that the Libyan walk out from the summit was not to be interpreted as an unfriendly stand against Egypt.
The Libyan delegation surprised the participants at the two-day emergency summit when it walked out after the morning session.
Libya said it was walking out of the summit because the forum was failing to push for a clear diplomatic break with Israel, or take concrete measures to stop the Israeli aggressive practises against the Palestinian people and the Arab nation, according to the statement the delegation issued.
Kadhafi refused to attend the summit, but he was represented by his permanent delegate to the Arab League, Abdel Moneim al-Honi.
The Libyan delegation did not address the meeting, or announce donations to the proposed Aqsa Fund and Jerusalem Fund, to be set up in support for the Palestinians, with a billion dollar in assets.
Meanwhile, President Mubarak met on the same day with his Yemeni counterpart, Ali Abdullah Saleh, to overcome a misunderstanding that arose when Mubarak sarcastically commented on a previous statement by Saleh, in which he showed readiness to “send Yemeni forces to support the Intifada heroes in Palestine.”
