ALBAWABA - Joseph Aoun, Lebanese army commander, just got elected as Lebanon's 14th president in the second voting session of the Lebanese parliament with 99 votes.
Joseph Aoun is the first to be picked since the departure of Michel Aoun in 2022.
Lebanese lawmakers were unable from the first session on Jan. 9 to elect a new president. A second session was hosted during which 128 MPs cast their ballots.
Lebanon's 13th President Michel Aoun left office after serving from 31 October 31, 2016, to October 30, 2022.
Today, the Lebanese lawmakers gathered inside the parliament and agreed on Joseph Aoun as the 14th president of Lebanon.
Earlier, media suggests that at least 81 lawmakers from different parties announced that they wanted to vote for Aoun in the session.
Many Lebanese parties announced support for Joseph Aoun including the Lebanese Forces party, the Democratic Gathering bloc, the Independent Parliamentarians bloc, and the Independent National Bloc.
Al Jazeera said that the process of electing a new president in Lebanon requires a two-thirds majority of the votes of the 128 members of parliament in the first round, while an absolute majority (over 50 percent) is sufficient in subsequent rounds.
