An independent Palestine and a Middle East devoid of nuclear weapons were the aims laid down by Jordan's King Abdullah and Iran's President Mohammad Khatami at the end of the first visit to Tehran by a Jordanian monarch since 1979 on Wednesday.
In a joint communique' following their talks, the two called for the creation of "an independent Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem," IRNA reported.
In addition, they emphasized the need to "promote security and stability in the region" which should be clear of all nuclear weapons, according to IRNA, a reference to Israel's nuclear capability and Iran's claims that its nuclear program has no military application.
They also acknowledged that the formation of a cabinet in Iraq was "a step towards putting power back in the hands of the people".
Earlier, King Abdullah met with Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, having already held talks during his two-day official visit with Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi and other ministers. (Albawaba.com)
