Leaders of Jordan's Islamic Action Front (IAF) were leaving Monday for Khartoum to try to reconcile Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir and sacked parliamentary speaker Hassan al-Turabi, one of them said.
"We expect to leave later Monday for Sudan in an attempt to mediate in the crisis," IAF secretary general Abdel Latif Arabiyat told AFP.
"In Islam it is the duty of every person to attempt to reconcile people and we hope this will contribute to easing the tension in Sudan," he added.
Arabiyat said he would be accompanied on the trip by Ishaq Farhan, the chairman of the IAF, which is the political branch of Jordan's influential Muslim Brotherhood.
Last week Arabiyat announced his intention to try to defuse the crisis that has pitted Beshir against Turabi, the former eminence godfather of the Muslim-military regime that has ruled in Sudan since 1989.
Beshir fell out with Turabi last year and proclaimed a state of emergency on December 12, dissolving parliament and dismissing the veteran Islamist ideologue from his post as president of parliament.
On May 6 the Sudanese president suspended Turabi as secretary general of the ruling National Congress party, effectively preventing him from having any political role in the country as well as from making speeches.
