A Jordanian policeman who was critically injured in clashes with protesters in the southern city of Maan died of his wounds in an Amman hospital, the country's public security chief announced. The policeman Moein Yusuf Sabahin, 24, was shot in the heart and rushed to hospital in a critical condition, General Tahsin Shardam told journalists.
The interior ministry had formed a commission of inquiry into this incident.
Meanwhile, scores of Jordanian policemen deployed across the centre of the city on Wednesday and re-established order after two days of intensive public unrest. Shops opened and traffic returned to the streets.
However, according to Reuters, tension remained high as residents counted the cost of the worst public disorder in nearly four years.
The riots started on Monday night over the death of 15-year-old Suleiman Ahmad al-Fanatseh while in police custody. Police have denied torturing Fanatseh, who died in hospital in Amman on Saturday.
The demonstrators set ablaze the city's main police station and a nearby post office on Tuesday, ransacked a public school and stormed a government building, destroying computers and other office equipment, witnesses said. (Albawaba.com)
