Three suspected Jordanians appeared in court on Wednesday accused of plotting to kill American President George W. Bush and to bomb the US and Danish embassies.
Nidal Momani, Sattam Zawahra and Tharwat Ali Draz were arrested on November 28, a day before Bush visited Jordan, and later indicted on charges of "conspiracy to carry out terrorist plots," a judicial source said.
According to AFP, the men allegedly plotted to "bomb the US and Danish embassies in Jordan and assassinate US President George W. Bush upon his arrival to Jordan on a visit," the source said. The suspects face the death penalty if found guilty.
Bush was in Jordan on November 29-30 for talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
The source said Zawahra tried to obtain weapons and explosives to carry out the plan, which was foiled by Jordanian security forces. The suspects, all in their 20s, hail from Zarqa, northeast of Amman, and were "bound by friendship and their jihadist" convictions, the charge sheet said.
They are also accused of attacking a beer factory in Zarqa in October with home-made petrol bombs, it said.
The case was adjourned until March 14.
