Jordan’s King Abdullah II returned home on Tuesday following a short visit to Russia where he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Middle East region, especially the Palestinian issue and the Iraqi situation.
An official Jordanian statement said that King Abdullah II and Putin discussed on Tuesday ways of promoting relations between Amman and Moscow in various fields, in addition to the current situation in the Middle East, the Kuwait news agency reported.
The discussions, which were attended by Prince Faisal Bin Al Hussein and a number of senior officials from both sides, dealt with means of strengthening bilateral ties in the political, economic and security arenas.
Moreover, they covered mechanisms of enriching military cooperation in addition to the exchange of military expertise.
King Abdullah and President Putin affirmed that the distinguished relations between both counties reflect the identical views of Jordan and Russia towards a number of regional and international matters, the statement said.
Furthermore, discussions covered the deteriorating situation in the Palestinian territories and efforts to revive the peace process through the resumption of negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of the road map.
On the issue of Iraq, King Abdullah and Putin expressed hope that Baghdad's acceptance of Security Council resolution 1441 and the return of weapons inspectors would form a positive step in the right direction to solve the Iraqi crisis through the United Nations and spare Iraq a possible war.
In the course of the Monarch’s visit to Russia, he also met with Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Dimitrov during which he discussed with him cooperation between the two countries in the military sphere. (Albawaba.com)
