King Abdullah II of Jordan dissolved parliament on Thursday and called for early elections, on the eve of a major opposition demonstration which backs political reform. "The king has decided to dissolve the Chamber of Deputies and called for early elections," said a statement from the royal cabinet.
The date of the elections has not been specified, but the king has in the past expressed his wish that they would take place in late 2012.
The announcement comes on the eve of a demonstration in Amman organized by the Muslim Brotherhood, the main opposition force, which calls for months to carry out fundamental reforms, including a "fair electoral law, a serious fight against corruption and constitutional reform. "
More than 50,000 people are expected at the rally, organizers said.
In response to widespread opposition protests and calls for reform, Abdullah II announced his intention to early elections. But the Muslim Brotherhood had announced that they would boycott it, as they did in 2010, to protest against the lack of reforms.
