Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Moasher said that Palestinian reforms urged by the United States are not the only problem in the Middle East, where a political solution must be found.

"The problem is not only one of Palestinian reforms, something which we support, but we must also launch a political process, as quickly as possible, because the situation in the West Bank is very serious," Moasher said.

He was speaking at a joint news conference in Amman with French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin, AFP reported. "We have noticed that there is a concentration (of efforts) on the security track and we don't approve of that," Moasher said, reiterating Jordan's position that efforts must focus on finding a political settlement.

"A relaunch of the peace process must accompany this (security) track and lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders," he said. "It is high time to focus on this aspect," Moasher insisted.

Moasher said Arafat's sacking of West Bank preventive security chief Jibril Rajoub, which has triggered a wave of protests among his supporters, was his sovereign right. "Jordan supports Palestinian reforms that are made by the Palestinians themselves and not imposed from the outside," Moasher said, adding quickly, however, that Amman does not intervene in internal Palestinian affairs.
