Following two years of Jon & Kate Plus 8, the TLC reality show that trails couple Jon and Kate Gosselin alongside their fraternal twins and sextuplets, has entered its final chapter: divorce. “We have decided to separate,” Jon told the camera Monday night forty minutes into the one-hour show. “I was too passive–I let her rule the roost. . . . I went along with everything and finally stood up on my two feet and I'm proud of myself,” he added.
The two have been the target of tabloids in recent week following rumors of infidelity. Into its fifth season, the show moved more from the couple’s responsibilities to their children and more to their marital problems. Jon has been accused of having relations with a 23-year-old teacher while Kate has been accused of seeing her bodyguard. This is in addition to a pending investigation by the Pennsylvania Labor Department into the show’s violation of local labor laws, an allegation denied by TLC but has nevertheless added to their troubles.
TLC has announced that the reality show will continue airing, but whether viewers will stay tuned remains unclear. Last week’s installment attracted only 2.9 million viewers, down from the season premier of 9.8 million viewers. As for the eight children, they will remain living in the Pennsylvania mini-mansion where the show is filmed.
