Tawam Hospital, the UAE and Gulf region's premier healthcare provider, hosted Mr. E. Robert Feroli, Medication Safety Officer in the Department of Pharmacy Services at Johns Hopkins Hospital, who visited and reviewed the Al Ain-based medical facility's Pharmacy Department recently.

Mr. Feroli's visit was part of Tawam Hospital's plans to upgrade and modernise its pharmacy section to keep up with the advanced treatments the hospital offers and the increasing number of specialities it proposes to add, through its affiliation with Johns Hopkins Hospital, the globally-renowned healthcare provider based in Baltimore in the United States.

Mr. Michael Heindel, CEO, Tawam Hospital said: "Tawam Hospital warmly welcomes Mr. Feroli, who has over three decades of professional experience in devising, implementing and managing medication and pharmacy information systems. Tawam Hospital will gain immensely from Mr. Feroli's vast expertise and thus achieve its goal of providing the best in international healthcare practices and services to the people of the UAE and the Gulf region."

"Tawam Hospital's affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine has made us one of the region's leading medical facilities offering world-class diagnostic, treatment and therapeutic services. It is essential that such services are backed by efficient medication and information systems and the prompt and regular availability of a wide range of pharmacological products and medical aids," Mr. Heindel added.

During his short visit, Mr. Feroli also made a Continuing Medical Education (CME) presentation titled "Anatomy of a Medication Error" for medical professionals and staff at Tawam Hospital. The presentation highlighted ways to improve the probability of a positive therapeutic outcome, described basic types of human error and provided strategies for decreasing the probability of error and also pointed out strategies to limit or prevent harm when inevitable human error occurs.

Mr. Feroli has worked at Johns Hopkins in various capacities since joining the hospital in 1978. Holding a doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Maryland, he is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy at the University of Maryland. He is also a faculty member of Johns Hopkins University's School of Nursing and Department of Medicine.

During his illustrious career, Mr. Feroli has received and been nominated for several awards honouring excellence in teaching and the profession. He has served on many local, regional and international committees and boards and has several publications and presentations to his credit on topics ranging from patient and medication safety, to ideal medication-use systems and tackling bioterrorism.

Tawam Hospital gained affiliation to Johns Hopkins Medicine in April 2006. Recently, it also secured accreditation from the Joint Commission of International Accreditation in the US, becoming the first hospital in Abu Dhabi, and the second in the UAE to receive this distinction. Tawam offers specialist treatment in Oncology, Cardiology, Family Medicine, Fertility Services and Intensive Care Services and has emerged as a major referral centre for critical cases from the UAE and the region.
