US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived Friday in Baghdad for talks with Iraqi officials on the progress of the fight against Daesh.
The top US diplomat will meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, an Iraqi official said.
"Kerry will discuss with the Iraqi officials the developments of the war against the terrorist Daesh," a spokesman for Iraqi Foreign Ministry Ahmed Jamal said.
The talks will also cover the role of a US-led military alliance in driving the al-Qaeda breakaway group out of Iraq, Jamal told independent Iraqi website Alsumaria News.
In recent months, Iraqi government forces, backed by the US-led air campaign, have recaptured territory from Daesh.
In December 2015, Iraq regained the western and mostly Sunni city of Ramadi, marking the first major setback for the group in months.
Daesh still controls areas in Iraq's Sunni heartland in the west and north.
