Japan announced Monday it had temporarily shuttered the doors to its embassy in Yemen, AFP reported, adding to the numerous diplomats that have left in fear of the Houthi takeover.

In light of the Shiite militant group taking control of the government, several countries have already decided to close their embassies in Yemen — including the US, UK, Saudi Arabia and France.

Earlier this month a United Nations special envoy to Yemen warned the nation was on the brink of a civil war. The country has been in crisis since the Houthis took over the capital in September and later forced the presidential administration to resign.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting over the weekend to denounce the Houthis and its new constitution for the country, but the militant group vowed to remain defiant against any moves by the United Nations.
