The attacker who shot and killed 39 people at an Istanbul nightclub on New Year's eve has been identified as an Uzbek extremist, AFP reported.
Since the attack, there has been confusion over the identity of the killer - who has still not been named publicly - with reports initially suggesting a Kyrgyz national and then an ethnic Uighur from western China.
Turkish intelligence services have now identified the shooter as a 34-year-old Uzbek who joined a Central Asian Daesh cell, according to Turkish media reports.
He is reportedly known as Ebu Muhammed Horasani within the Daesh cell.
The killer, who managed to flee the scene of the shooting, remains on the run despite an intense manhunt.
Last week Turkish police released photos of the alleged killer, including a silent video he took at Istanbul's Taksim Square with a selfie stick.
