Israel’s Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz has authorized a general staff plan making women eligible for army reserve duty until the age of 38, unless they are officially recognized as mothers or as being pregnant, Israel Radio reported, cited by Haaretz newspaper.
The plan also calls for expanding the roles in which women carry out their reserve duties. The Israel Defense Force (IDF) said the plan was a result of its desire to promote equal opportunities.
The army added that women would be called up in accordance with the security situation and the needs of the army.
The plan also states that the Women's Force will in August be disbanded as an independent unit and incorporated into the general staff, said the radio.
It will be headed by an advisor, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, who will report to the chief of staff on women's issues – Albawaba.com
