An Israeli warplane fired a missile at a car in Gaza City after sundown Tuesday, killing at least eight people and wounding at least 25, reports said. One of the men targeted and killed in the strike was Sa'id al Arbid, one of the heads of the Hamas military wing.

Women and children were among the casualties brought to the hospital. Residents said two Israeli F-16 fighter planes circled low over Gaza City, breaking the sound barrier, in the minutes before the air strike at the Zeitoun neighbourhood.

The Israeli warplanes appeared to be targeting a car, but their first missile missed the target, witnesses said.
