A prominent Professor at Israel’s Tel Aviv University recently conveyed that Israel’s nuclear program has fallen short of its goals.
Professor Ze’ev Maoz, the Head of the University’s School of Government and Policy, harshly criticized the program’s mysterious nature, stating that it has accelerated the rate of acquisition of nuclear arsenals by Israel’s “enemies”. According to Maoz, nuclear development within Israel triggered the creation of a missile program in Egypt, as well as chemical weaponry.
According to Israeli press reports, Maoz further denounced the program for its failure to prevent wars and its inability to protect the civilian populace. The secrecy of the program, has in his view, created a huge gap between the actual security needs of the state and the nuclear program.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has declared continuation of ‘deliberate ambiguity’ in strategic doctrine related to the country’s nuclear program.
Reports by various U.S. scientists have suggested that Israel could have produced enough plutonium to create nearly 200 nuclear weapons. Israel has always refused inspection of its Dimona facility, and has refused to sign the nuclear non-proliferation agreement. (Albawaba.com)
