Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced on Monday that he has prostate cancer, but that the disease is not threatening his life. Olmert, who took office in March 2006, is 62 years old. The Israeli leader convened a special news conference to deliver the news himself. He said he will not require radiation or chemotherapy and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Olmert's physician said during the press conference that the cancer was just in its initial stages and it can be cured.
The disease commonly striking after a man is after 50. It can be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and occasionally chemotherapy, among other treatments.
