The Israeli army confirmed Thursday a helicopter gunship attack in the West Bank that killed two people, but said the target, an activist from the Fateh movement, was only wounded.

The army said in a statement that five Palestinians were wounded in the attack on a vehicle in the northwestern town of Tulkarem, including Tulkarem Fateh official Raad Mohammad Raaf Al Karami, AFP and Haaretz reported.

The army said Karami, who was in the same car as the two victims, was the target of the attack, but Palestinian sources said he managed to jump out of the car in time.

The sources named the two dead as Omar Sobah of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and Mustafa Ambus of Fateh.

The statement held Karami responsible for several anti-Israeli attacks, including the January 23 killing of two Israeli civilians and the killing of two settlers in the Tulkarem area in two separate attacks on May 31 and June 16.

"The Israeli authorities had given Karami's name to the Palestinian Authority for his arrest, but nothing was done to that effect," the statement added, cited by AFP.
