The Arab Follow-up committee in Israel decided at a meeting held late Sunday to stage a general strike Monday, and made preparations for the funeral of an Arab killed by Israeli fire in the Arab town of Um el Fahem.
Arab member of Knesset Azmi Bshara told Albawaba.com in a telephone call that the committee discussed the “continuation of efforts of solidarity with the Palestinian people [in the West Bank and Gaza,] vowing to do its best to render the Monday strike a success.”
Bshara added that the day following the strike “will be dedicated to educating the Arabs in Israel on Jerusalem.”
The Follow-up committee also decided to observe the first of October every year as “Jerusalem Day.”
Arab towns in Israel witnessed Sunday violent clashes with the Israeli security forces that resulted in the death of a resident of Um el Fahem and the injury of at least 40.
The confrontations broke out as the Israeli Arabs staged rallies in solidarity with “the Intifada of Al Aqsa.”
