The Knesset (Israel’s parliament) has passed a law calling for sentences of up to 20 years in prison for throwing stones at vehicles.
According to Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth, the new legislation mandates jail terms of up to 20 years for Palestinians convicted of throwing stones at cars with the intent of striking passengers.
Palestinian observers, for their part, blasted the new law.
“This law is insane. It is only the latest in a long series of Israeli violations against the Palestinian people,” Fuad al-Khafsh, director of the Ahrar Center for Research and Human Rights, a Palestinian NGO devoted to defending the rights of Palestinian detained by the Israeli authorities, told Anadolu Agency.
“Israeli laws are becoming harsher. But this won’t stop Palestinian youth – who feel they have nothing left to lose – from resisting the occupation,” he added.
