An Israel official said Monday that Israel is about to release approximately 80 Palestinian prisoners ahead of forthcoming US-mediated peace negotiationsAFP reported.

"The prisoner releases will start when talks commence", the Israeli official said, as quoted by the AFP. "We're talking about releasing them in stages".

The official added that the prisoners in question were all "pre-Oslo", meaning those Palestinians who have been in Israeli prisons since before the 1993 Oslo peace accords.
