Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on March 9, 2021 said he was working to repatriate the remains the Israeli agent executed in 1965 after working deep undercover in Syria. The comment comes after the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said that Russian forces had been searching the Yarmuk Palestinian refugee camp in southern Damascus for the remains of Cohen and two Israeli soldiers. / AFP / MENAHEM KAHANA

ALBAWABA - The late Israeli secret service Mossad spy Eli Cohen is back in the news, nearly six decades after Syrian authorities executed him.

He is trending in the Times of  IsraelJerusalem Post as well as the Anadolu press agency, where his name splashed the headlines.

On Monday, Israeli authorities published the last telegram the secret service agent sent before Syrian authorities nabbed him and subsequently executed him in 1965, according to Anadolu

Now, there is a public debate in Israel about what exactly happened to the longtime spy at the time, and why he was executed. People questioned whether Cohen had overworked as a result of his handlers asking too much of him, prompting him to send too many messages from Damascus, which were intercepted by the Syrians.

Israel considered Cohen a valuable asset, given that he was active in Syria. Cohen arrived in the Arab country in January 1962, disguised as Arab "Kamel Amin Thabet." He resided in the capital, Damascus, where he supplied the Israeli secret service agency, the Mossad, with important information about the Arab nation.
