Israel's Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein is to ask the Central Election Committee to disqualify the Arab list Balad (National Democratic Alliance) from competing in the Knesset elections because its "goals contradict the Jewish-democratic nature of the state of Israel and because it supports organizations fighting against Israel," Haaretz reported.
Rubinstein said that the list, headed by Azmi Bishara, contradicts the Basic Law on the Knesset.
Adittionally, a member of the right-wing Likud party presented the committee with a petition to disqualify Bishara from competing in the elections. The petition said that Bishara had expressed support many times for organizations working against Israel and its citizens, in particular Hizbullah, and identified with them and with their acts.
