Israeli forces killed two Palestinian activists near the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Tuesday, the Israeli army and Palestinian officials said. The two were identified as members of the Islamic Jihad movement, a Palestinian security official said, according to Reuters.
The Jerusalem Brigades - the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad - identified the victims as 43 year old Khaled al Rayeq (Abu Saqer) and his aide Muhammad al Jawabri. Both were senior leaders of the armed wing in Jenin area.
An army spokesman said the two were armed with rifles and died in an exchange of fire. One Israeli soldier was hurt. According to the spokesman, the operation was carried out by a special Israeli unit, which also arrested six other Palestinians.
Meanwhile, one Palestinian inmate died of injuries suffered in an Israeli jail riot and over a dozen were hurt after violet clashes on Monday with prison guards, 15 of whom were also wounded, a prisons spokeswoman said on Tuesday. The spokeswoman said the guards used only "non-lethal" means to quell the riot.
Palestinian member of parliament Issa Qaraqe told Reuters prisoners in Israeli jails would hold a one-day hunger strike on Tuesday to protest against the brutality.
