Israel's army and police were on a war footing Friday over fears of terror attacks following the release of Islamic militant group Hamas prisoners by the Palestinian Authority the day before.

An unidentified top Israeli security official warned on state radio of the possibility of attacks "in the coming days or even hours" following Thursday's Israeli rocket attacks on the West Bank town of Ramallah and the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian-run town of Ramallah, which bore the brunt of Israeli firepower Thursday, is some 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Jerusalem, where security was tightened in market places, shopping centers, synagogues and public places.

Police and soldiers have been deployed in numbers, while Israel has kept its borders with the Palestinian territories closed.
