Militants with the ISIL group have killed at least 25 Sunni tribesmen in the western Iraqi Anbar province, which remains largely under the terrorists’ control.
The bodies, which belonged to men from the Albu Fahd tribe, were found by the Iraqi army. The incident took place in a village on the eastern edge of the provincial capital Ramadi.
The strategic city has been the scene of a hard-fought battle between Iraqi forces backed by tribesmen, and the ISIL terrorists.
"While they were combing the territories they are liberating, security forces found 25 corpses in the Shujariya area," said Hathal Al-Fahdawi, a member of the Anbar Provincial Council.
ISIL militants killed hundreds of members of the Albu Nimr tribe in Anbar last month.
The ISIL, which has seized control of large parts of Syria and Iraq, continues to gain territory in Anbar, despite three months of US-led airstrikes launched against the group.
The militants have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against Iraqi communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians.
