According to AFP, Sunni militants have made advances in western Iraq, capturing several towns including Rawa and Ana after taking the al-Qaim border crossing.

Nearly 21 people were killed when members of ISIL gunned down Iraqi leaders in both towns, AFP reports.

Iraqi security forces are struggling to battle ISIL militants who have recently captured Mosul and Tikrit.

Elsewhere in Iraq, 23 detainees were killed during an attack on an Iraqi convoy near Baghdad Monday.

In response to the ongoing crisis, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited Iraq Monday to meet with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Kerry is urging Maliki to form a stable government that suits all Iraqis.
