ALBAWABA - Safa Al-Mashhadani, an Iraqi member of the Baghdad Provincial Council, was assassinated on early Wednesday morning, local media confirmed.

The Baghdad Provincial Council member and parliamentary candidate was killed when an explosive device exploded targeting his vehicle in the Tarmiyah area, north of the Iraqi capital.

A video showing Safa Al-Mashhadani's car on fire before experiencing a second explosion was shared on social media, shocking people.

Reports indicated that "the assassination took place during Al-Mashhadani's field tour in Tarmiyah."

Safa Al-Mashhadani is a parliamentary candidate of Al-Seyada Alliance, which is one of the major Sunni parties running in the elections. Khamis al-Khanjar and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani lead the party.

It is noteworthy that this assassination is the first in the Iraqi parliamentary elections, which will be held on November 11.
